The OEM side stand return spring is a bit on the weak side and has a tough time holding up the side stand. This is especially true over rough terrain. If the side stand is allowed to swing down, even a couple inches, the side stand safety switch will kill the engine. You're riding down a desert two track and you hit a drip in the trail and your bike dies... way less than ideal.
